Indianapolis Colts 2025 Season: The Rise and Collapse of an 8-2 Contender

The Colts’ 2025 season delivered one of the most thrilling starts and one of the most painful finishes in franchise history. Indianapolis scored at will in September, seized first place in the AFC South, and sat at 8-2 in mid-November. Jonathan Taylor ran like an MVP candidate, and newcomer Daniel Jones looked like the answer at quarterback. Then everything unraveled. A seven-game losing streak dropped the Colts to 8-9, and no team in NFL history had ever turned an 8-2 start into a losing record.

Building a Contender Around a New Quarterback

A Franchise in Mourning

The season began under a heavy shadow. Longtime owner Jim Irsay died on May 21, 2025, ending an era that had defined the franchise since the move from Baltimore. Ownership passed to his daughters, Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Kalen Jackson, and Casey Foyt. The team wore patches honoring Irsay all season, and he entered the Ring of Honor at the home opener. Every win that autumn carried added emotional weight.

Jones Wins the Job

Chris Ballard’s biggest offseason gamble came at quarterback. Indianapolis signed Daniel Jones on a one-year deal to compete with Anthony Richardson. Jones won the job in camp, and Shane Steichen handed him the offense for his third season as head coach.

The defense received a meaningful overhaul, starting on the sideline. Indianapolis hired former Cincinnati coordinator Lou Anarumo to replace Gus Bradley and reshape the unit. Anarumo inherited a talented front led by DeForest Buckner, Kwity Paye, and second-year edge rusher Laiatu Latu. The back end needed help, and Ballard spent accordingly. Safety Camryn Bynum arrived from Minnesota, and cornerback Charvarius Ward came over from San Francisco. Veteran corner Xavien Howard signed in August. Losses up front stung, however, as center Ryan Kelly and guard Will Fries both left in free agency.

The draft added a centerpiece. Penn State tight end Tyler Warren went 14th overall, and Ohio State edge rusher JT Tuimoloau followed in the second round. Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard arrived in the sixth round as a developmental backup. Nobody expected that pick to matter in January.

The Fastest Start in a Generation

An Offense That Would Not Punt

Indianapolis announced itself immediately. Jones led a scoring drive on every possession in a 33-8 rout of Miami, the franchise’s first opening-week win since 2013. The Colts scored on their first 10 possessions of the year, something no NFL team had done before.

Week 2 nearly brought the first stumble. Spencer Shrader missed a 60-yard field goal against Denver as time expired. A Broncos penalty gave him another chance, and he drilled a 45-yarder to steal a 29-28 win. A 41-20 victory at Tennessee followed. The Colts piled up 103 points across three games, the most to open any season in Indianapolis, and punted only once.

A 27-20 loss to the Rams ended the perfect start, but the response came quickly. Taylor ran for three touchdowns in a 40-6 demolition of Las Vegas. That victory carried a cost, as Shrader suffered multiple torn ligaments and was lost for the year. A 31-27 win over Arizona produced the club’s best 5-1 start since 2009.

Taylor’s Run Through Berlin

Taylor turned October into a personal showcase. He scored three times in a 38-24 win over the Chargers and again in a 38-14 rout of Tennessee. Against the Titans, he became the first player in NFL history to post three touchdowns in three straight games against the same opponent. His performance that afternoon covered 153 yards.

Pittsburgh briefly halted the momentum. The Steelers forced six turnovers and sacked Jones five times in a 27-20 win. The Colts then traveled to Germany for the first regular-season NFL game in Berlin.

Atlanta pushed the game into overtime, and the international stage tightened around a team that badly needed a response. Taylor answered with the finest game of his career. He rushed for 244 yards and three touchdowns, including an 83-yard burst that stood as the longest run of the NFL season. The 31-25 win lifted Indianapolis to 8-2.

How an 8-2 Season Unraveled

Heartbreak at Arrowhead

The Kansas City game should have announced the Colts as a true AFC power. Indianapolis led 20-9 in the fourth quarter at Arrowhead Stadium. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs then rallied, scoring the final 14 points to win 23-20 in overtime. That defeat defined the season more than any other.

General manager Chris Ballard had already pushed his chips to the center of the table. At the November trade deadline, Indianapolis acquired cornerback Sauce Gardner from the Jets. The price, detailed by NFL.com, included the club’s 2026 and 2027 first-round picks plus receiver Adonai Mitchell. The deal signaled a team built to win immediately.

Houston then handed Indianapolis its first home loss. The game sat tied 13-13 in the fourth quarter before the Texans pulled away for a 20-16 win. The AFC South lead was slipping.

The Achilles and the Return of Rivers

The trip to Jacksonville delivered the cruelest blow. Jones tore his right Achilles tendon in a 36-19 loss, ending a season that had once drawn MVP chatter. The quarterback room was already depleted. Richardson had fractured his orbital bone in a freak pregame accident with a resistance band, as reported by KRDO. Leonard was nursing a knee injury.

Steichen reached into the past. Philip Rivers, 44 years old and coaching high school football in Alabama, had not played since 2020. The Colts signed him to the practice squad and promoted him to start at Seattle. The comeback story captivated the league, and NBC News chronicled how quickly the season had turned from dream to nightmare.

Rivers threw for 120 yards and a touchdown in his return. Blake Grupe, signed to replace Shrader, kicked a 60-yard field goal, the longest in franchise history. Seattle still escaped with an 18-16 win.

The Final Fall

San Francisco then exposed a battered defense. Brock Purdy threw five touchdown passes, and the Colts never forced a punt in a 48-27 loss. A 23-17 defeat to Jacksonville followed, and Houston’s win over the Chargers eliminated Indianapolis from contention.

Leonard made his first career start in the last game at Houston. The Colts fell 38-30, their fifth straight loss to the Texans and seventh consecutive defeat overall. Indianapolis finished 8-9 and third in the division, one spot outside the AFC playoff field. A campaign that once pointed toward a first-round bye ended with the Colts’ 2025 season already decided before the finale in Houston.

Legacy of a Season Lost

The Colts’ 2025 season will be remembered as a historic collapse, but the numbers reveal real strength. Indianapolis scored 466 points, eighth in the league, and averaged 27.4 per game. Jones completed 68 percent of his passes for 3,101 yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions before his injury. Those figures, preserved by Pro Football Reference, signaled a revival few had predicted.

Taylor led the NFL with 1,585 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. Along the way, he passed Edgerrin James for the franchise record in career rushing touchdowns. Alec Pierce cleared 1,000 receiving yards, and Warren added 817 as a rookie. On defense, Laiatu Latu led the team with 8.5 sacks, while Bynum grabbed four interceptions.

Individual honors followed. Quenton Nelson earned second-team All-Pro recognition and joined Taylor and Warren in the Pro Bowl. Rivers, meanwhile, finished with 544 yards and four touchdowns across three starts, a final chapter documented on his Colts.com profile.

The cost of the collapse extends beyond one year. Indianapolis became the first team since the 2012 Bears to start 7-1 and miss the playoffs. Without first-round picks in 2026 and 2027, the front office must rebuild through other means. The 8-2 start proved this roster could compete with anyone in the AFC. The 0-7 finish proved how fragile that contender truly was.
